Editorial 5

This editorial I read was called, "Mr Obama and No Child Left Behind" it focused on how the No Child Left Behind is still not doing what it was meant to, and the ways President Obama wants to change it. Obama wants to focus federal sanctions and monitoring on the schools that are failing which will aloow better-run schools more flexibility to fix themselves. The editorial takes on the position that this plan makes a lot of sense as long as the better schools are not allowed to, "shortchange poor and minority children." Under No child left behind, a school needs improvement if they miss progress targets, and to fix this Obama wants  to create a system in which schools recieve credit for improving student performance, which the authors of the editorial believe is good, as long as a significant reward is being rewarded. If this plan is adopted by Congress, states would need to make a system in which teachers and principals would be rated based on students' performance.

The editorial also takes a look at what NO Child Left behind's overall impact has been, and federal data shows that schools with a majority of minority children are still disproportionally taught by inexperienced teachers. I think that Obama's plan could work, as long as children are not shortchanged and the proper schools are rewarded.
